Designed in 1964 by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm, the FK64 Scimitar Chair is an icon of Danish steel modernism. Its visually commanding silhouette is defined by a striking stainless-steel crescent base and a sculpted veneer seat, upholstered in leather or textile.
Function and minimalism were the watchwords for Danish designers Preben Fabricius (1931–1984) and Jørgen Kastholm (1931–2007), when this design duo created a wide collection of design-led furniture and lighting of international renown. Coming from two different artisanal backgrounds, they developed an appreciation for one another as designers, which resulted in a common, distinctive style of design.
A Sculptural Masterpiece
The FK64 Scimitar Chair exemplifies the collaborative relationship between Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm, each leaning into their respective backgrounds of blacksmithing and cabinetry to create a striking and sophisticated whole. First presented at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1963, the chair marked a pivotal moment in Danish furniture design. The duo were one of the first designers to work extensively with steel and leather, introducing a new era of Danish steel modernism through their industrial, minimalist design language. Inspired by his time living in Lebanon, Jørgen Kastholm drew inspiration from regional culture for the early iterations of the design. Observing how people sat close to the ground on rugs, Kastholm explored a more relaxed, organic way of sitting, developing sketches for a wide seat that could accommodate a crossed-leg posture. Returning to Denmark, he refined the design with Preben Fabricius, arriving at a softly contoured seat that appears almost to float, made with precisely curved veneer. Named after the curved blade of a scimitar sword, the chair establishes a strong presence with its distinctive stainless-steel crescent base. The chair is a masterful balance of structural strength and visual lightness, demonstrating Fabricius and Kastholm’s architectural approach. Its streamlined, minimalist expression reveals subtle technical complexities in the precision casting and finely stitched, tight upholstery. Available in leather and textile, the FK64 Scimitar Chair brings sleek, architectural elegance to refined interiors.
