70 years of the CH78 Mama Bear Chair

Introducing a new colour palette

Affectionately known as the Mama Bear Chair, the CH78 Lounge Chair was originally introduced by Hans J. Wegner in 1954 as an extension of his compact CH71 Chair. In 2024, Carl Hansen & Søn commemorates the chair’s 70th anniversary with a celebratory special edition presenting a new woollen upholstery with a subdued colour palette.

The special edition is available in five different colours with an FSC-certified oiled oak frame, until January 31st, 2025. The chair comes with and without a neck pillow.

Explore the new colours below or at Carl Hansen & Søn Flagship Stores and selected dealers.

Palette of Watercolours

The special edition comprises the five colour options, scaling from natural greys to mossy green and a reddish brown, inspired by the colours of Wegner’s early water colouring sketches made for a drawing competition at the Royal Danish Academy where he studied in the 1930s. The sketches display different wallpaper patterns coloured in an elegant combination of earthy, subdued hues.

Mama Bear Chair’s sculptural silhouette balances soft, supportive curves with dynamic geometric shapes, staging a lesson in form, function and craftsmanship but also clearly demonstrates Wegner’s creative talent.

Sophisticated Softness

The upholstery, Umber, lends its name from the earthy brown pigment umber. It features a small-squared pattern in brown mélange - a defining feature that softens the geometric design while mimicking the distinctive, blurred watercolour effect. The fabric’s sophisticated aesthetic is enhanced by its hand-crafted quality, creating a soft surface that brings comfort, calm and serenity to any space.
