Mix Chair & Propeller Stool in new hues

Kaare Klint x Kvadrat/Raf Simons

On the 90th anniversary of Kaare Klint’s Mix Chair and Propeller stool, Carl Hansen & Søn marks this milestone with a limited edition fusing Klint’s minimalist and precise design with Kvadrat/Raf Simons’ playful and painterly approach.

Kaare Klint, known as the father of Danish Modern, designed the Mix Chair and Propeller Stool in 1930. The Mix Chair was designed in collaboration with his student Edvard Kindt-Larsen, hence the name “Mix”, and has been in production ever since. The Propeller Stool, however, was too complex to put into production at the time and the design was left in the drawer until 1962 before the design saw the light of day.

Originally, only available in transparently treated solid wood, leather and canvas, both the Mix Chair and Propeller Stool are now – and for the first time ever - available in vibrant, lacquered versions combined with Kvadrat/Raf Simons’ vivid Ria fabric in cool and warm hues.

The Propeller Stool is an exercise in mathematical construction and expresses Klint’s vision of the ideal fold, with the two intersecting, propeller-shaped legs forming a perfectly round rod when folded flat.

The Mix Chair has earned iconic status among collectors since its unveiling in 1930. This easy chair is admired as much for its elegant, flowing form as for its intricate construction concept based on the culmination of a sophisticated geometric exercise. The easy chair features a series of convex and concave curves that repeat and mirror one another to form the main frame and armrests. By contrast, the solid wood legs are kept square, with just the back legs gently sloping back to support the chair’s slightly reclined profile.

Available at Carl Hansen & Søn Flagship Stores until the end of 2021.

The use of color in Ria takes inspiration from Pointillism, the painterly technique through which vibrant fields of color are built up through the application of pure pigment in precise, individual dots. Each of Ria’s colorways brings together three tones of yarn creating a subtly textured dotting of color across and playful shimmering effect on the inviting rough surface.

Deeply rooted in the world of fine arts Kvadrat/Raf Simons and Klint and Simons have their artistic background in common. However, their design approach is very different. Where Klint is defined by a mathematical and minimalist approach, Kvadrat/Raf Simons takes an opulent and playful angle. By mixing these extremes something magical happens, infusing a modern vibe into the classic pieces”, says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and 3rd Generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn.
