The BM0489S Table Bench is, with its woven paper cord, a new interpretation of Børge Mogensen’s minimalist Table Bench from 1958. The design is characterised by its understated elegance, where the solid oak is softened by rounded edges and the double plane-weave paper cord. BM0489 comes in two sizes, and this short version is a versatile piece of furniture that can stand in a hallway, as a coffee or side table in the living room, as a bedside table – or arranged with other furniture.
Cabinetmaker and designer Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) created durable and simple furniture with a focus on people and is today regarded as one of the most influential representatives of Danish Modern. With a mission to make quality furniture accessible to everyone, Mogensen became known as “the people’s designer.”
Reinterpreted minimalism
Børge Mogensen was known for his love of traditional craftsmanship and his skill at designing simple, timeless and functional furniture in his preferred material – wood. A long version of the versatile BM0488 Table Bench was originally designed in 1958 and presented as part of Mogensen’s ‘construction furniture’ concept, where the vision was to create multifunctional and durable furniture in line with changing interior design needs. The BM0489 Table Bench is a reinterpretation of the original design in which rattan has been been replaced with double plane-weave FSC-certified paper cord for a fresh, organic look. Carl Hansen & Søn has more than 70 years of experience at working with paper cord, and it takes an experienced craftsman six hours to weave the 335 metres of cord to produce a finished piece of furniture. The new interpretation of Børge Mogensen’s Table Bench creates an elegant interplay between two organic materials – the beautifully rounded oak and tightly woven paper cord. BM0489 comes in a long version, BM0489L, and a short version, BM0489S.
