Floating, Sculptural Shape
Two of the biggest names in Danish design history, Nanna Ditzel and Jørgen Ditzel began their collaborative journey when they met at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts. They established their design studio in 1946, approaching furniture design with a curiosity focused on discovering new and innovative ways to break free from the rigidity of traditional functionalism, which was popular at the time. Designed in 1952, the ND52 Vita Sofa is a bold example of the Ditzels’ innovative approach to experimenting with shape and materiality. An almost complete departure from the geometric lines of the functionalist era, the sofa expresses a soft, organic idiom. An elegant, exposed solid wood frame supports a softly curved, open shell with a supportive, high back. Appearing almost to float, the ND52 Vita Sofa has a light and playful vernacular, with tight, hand-made upholstery in the backrest, buttons and seat. Understated and elegant, the ND52 Vita Sofa is suitable for private homes and the contract market.
