EM82 | Porcelight D140
The EM82 Porcelight Pendant displays a simple, sculptural expression, crafted from white glazed bone china. Designed in 1982 by Erik Magnussen, Porcelight reflects his pared-back, functional approach to design, using his foundation as a ceramicist to explore the translucent qualities of porcelain. Available in two sizes, its pure white shade transforms into a warm, golden light when switched on, bringing understated elegance to a variety of settings.
Erik Magnussen was a Danish ceramicist and industrial designer celebrated for his pure, functional forms shaped by a deep understanding of materials. His work spans ceramics, lighting and everyday objects, all characterised by simple, purposeful solutions where form follows function.
Uniting Art and Atmosphere
Erik Magnussen (1940-2014) brought an artisanal approach to industrial, modern design, informed by his early life, in which his grandfather was a well-known art dealer and his father, a mechanical engineer. He graduated as a ceramist and sculptor at the Copenhagen School of Applied Arts and Crafts in 1960 and would refer back to his training throughout his career. Known by his friends as ‘The Potter’, he preferred to use his hands in the early stages of development, building models to experience the physicality of how a design might be used. His trademark of architectural clean lines and understated simplicity stemmed from his pragmatic methodology, wherein the beauty of a design is found in its functionality. The Porcelight Pendant, designed in 1982, demonstrates this. As a material that has been used for thousands of years and celebrated for its fine appearance, Magnussen was keen to innovate and reimage bone china in less traditional applications. The pendant has a visually understated, quiet presence, allowing the material to speak for itself. Crafted from white glazed bone china, it turns from pure white to a soft, golden light when switched on. Available in two sizes, it hangs elegantly on its own or arranged in a cluster.
