ND550F | Footstool

Material:

oak, oil

Displaying an understated, mid-century modern vernacular, the ND550F Footstool combines refined curves with meticulous hand upholstery. Designed in 1955 by Danish architects Nanna Ditzel and Jørgen Ditzel, the footstool features slanted, tapered legs in oak or walnut with a generous seat upholstered on both the top and bottom in fabric or leather. The ND550F Footstool carries a timeless expression, making it a classic and versatile choice for use with a variety of lounge furniture from the collection, or as a stand-alone piece.

Her desire to explore spaces and experiment with techniques on the edge of what is possible led Nanna Ditzel – one of Danish design’s most distinctive personalities – to become acquainted with the entire design universe. This unconventional approach to the design process, together with an extensive knowledge of the craft, spawned a range of innovative designs from jewellery to textiles and furniture. Throughout her 60-year career, Nanna Ditzel established herself as one of the most distinctive figures in Danish design. She rethought the functionalist design tradition with her imaginative expressions and left her mark on thousands of private homes and public forums.

Understated Modern Comfort

Driven by a desire to break free from the rigid constraints of the Danish functionalist movement in the 1950s, Nanna Ditzel and Jørgen Ditzel would go on to define a new wave of colourful and innovative mid-century modern furniture. Favouring soft, organic silhouettes and playful shapes, the couple leaned into each other’s strengths, using their home as a playground to explore new ways to experience furniture as a modern family. Influenced by Jørgen Ditzel’s background in upholstery, fabrics in interesting new colours and patterns played a leading role in many of their designs. Defined by a softly sculpted seat that cradles the sitter, the ND550F Footstool epitomises the classic modernist shape, with gently slanted, tapered legs and elegant hand-upholstery. Its versatile and understated shape complements other lounge furniture from the collection or as a stand-alone piece. Returned to its original 1955 design by Carl Hansen & Søn, the footstool is available with FSC™-certified solid oak or walnut legs and handmade upholstery on both the top and bottom of the seat.
