Short and Sweet Japanese Carpentry
The Japanese name of the shelf, Tsugi, refers to the very method by which the shelf and wall bracket interlock and are secured with a brass pin. This distinctive form of joinery was developed in Japan in the 12th century, where it was used to avoid nails and screws, preserving the wood as intact as possible, especially in areas with high humidity. Despite its floating, minimalist appearance, the Tsugi shelf is very sturdy. As a functional detail, a groove has been milled into the shelf, ensuring that picture frames, small books, and other objects remain securely in place. Available in two sizes, the FB001 Tsugi Shelf is a versatile and decorative piece, elegant as a stand-alone bookshelf or combined and scaled using a mix of the shorter 60cm and original 100cm length.
