Since 1908, Carl Hansen & Søn has specialised in supplying exceptional craftsmanship which is designed and produced to last for generations. To ensure that your furniture lasts many years, it requires regular care and maintenance.
We recommend that tabletops are re-treated at regular intervals depending on where they are positioned and their use, or when the surface starts showing signs of wear. Soap-finished tabletops should be frequently re-treated.
Other furniture types do not generally require re-treatment. When re-treating, make sure that the upholstery, weave etc. is properly protected to prevent staining from soap and oil.
Solid wood – oil
1. Clean the surface. For best results, any stains and dirt must be removed completely before re-treatment.
2. Before applying the oil, lightly sand the entire surface with the sanding sponge. Always follow the direction of the grain when sanding.
3. Apply the oil with the white side of the sponge. Evenly spread a thin layer of oil over the entire surface. Leave the oil to sit for 5 minutes.
4. Wipe the surface thoroughly with the cloth to remove any excess oil and allow the surface to dry.
The drying time of the oil varies depending on the ambient temperature, so always check that it is not still wet before starting to use the furniture. The oil must be completely dry before using the furniture again.
WARNING! Please note that cloths or sponges that have been used to oil the furniture can ignite spontaneously, so they must always be kept in an airtight metal or glass container. This also applies when disposing of the cloths.
Solid wood – soap
1. Clean the surface. For best results, any stains and dirt must be removed completely before re-treatment. Any stubborn stains should be removed with the sanding sponge.
2. Before applying the soap, lightly sand the surface with the sanding sponge. Always follow the direction of the grain when sanding.
3. Apply the soap solution with the white side of the sponge while following the grain. Avoid leaving soap marks and streaks. Soap residue, especially on oak, can leave dark stains, which can subsequently be difficult to remove if left for too long. It may be a good idea to treat smaller sections at a time.
4. Wipe the surface with the cloth to remove any soap residue.
5. The underside of tabletops should also be treated to avoid uneven drying, as this can cause the wood to crack and warp.
Allow the furniture to dry completely before use.
It is possible that the wood fibres may rise up slightly after the first few soap treatments. These can removed with the sanding sponge once the surface is completely dry.
Oak will always appear slightly darker after re-treatment.
Veneer – oil
Veneered surfaces can be re-treated in the same way as solid wood surfaces. As the veneer is relatively thin, great care must be taken when using a sanding sponge.
1. Clean the surface. For best results, any stains and dirt must be removed completely before re-treatment.
2. Before applying the oil, lightly sand the entire surface with the sanding sponge. Always follow the direction of the grain when sanding.
