Øivind Slaatto

Poetic logic shaped by nature

A Danish designer whose intuitive, natureinspired approach explores light, structure and atmosphere through clarity, logic and human perception.

Øivind Slaatto (b. 1978) is recognised for a poetic yet deeply logical design approach, guided by the structures, rhythms and principles found in nature. His work balances intuition and analysis, often resulting in designs that feel both immediately familiar and quietly innovative. Light has become his primary field of expertise, where technical precision meets a refined sensitivity to atmosphere, harmony and visual comfort.

Born in Ulm, Germany, Slaatto grew up in Copenhagen in a home where creativity was part of everyday life. With no television in the household, white paper became his gateway to the world. From an early age, he drew aeroplanes, invented paper constructions and folded intricate flying objects - early experiments that revealed a mind driven by imagination, structure and exploration.

This inquisitive mindset initially led Slaatto to study music at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. While deeply engaged with sound and composition, he found himself increasingly drawn to drawing and inventing. The blackboards in the practice rooms often filled with sketches rather than musical notation, and gradually it became clear that his future lay within design rather than performance.

Although he changed disciplines, music never left his practice. It remains a fundamental layer in his approach to design, shaping a rhythmic and compositional way of working rooted in repetition, refinement and what he refers to as “the art of practice.” Like rehearsing a musical piece, Slaatto develops his designs through continuous iteration until the result reaches its most precise and balanced state.

“News is the world’s oldest invention – and rarely interesting. But if it helps us move in the right direction, it becomes exciting.”
- Øivind Slaatto

In 2011, Slaatto established his own studio in Copenhagen. Here, he works from a guiding philosophy: to create the most logical and truthful solution possible. He does not strive for spectacle, but for clarity designs that feel inherently right because their principles are grounded in nature. Rather than copying natural forms, he studies the forces behind them: balance and imbalance, predictability and variation, and the organic systems that govern form and structure.

Slaatto’s working process is highly experimental and handson. He moves deliberately between intuitive creation and analytical reflection, using prototyping as a crucial tool.

Ideas must be tested, experienced and challenged, allowing materials and geometry to inform one another throughout the process.

In his work with light, Slaatto focuses on reducing glare while enhancing functionality and atmosphere. For him, good lighting is not about brightness alone, but about visual comfort, reduced contrast and a balanced sensory experience.

Slaatto has received numerous awards from institutions including the Danish Arts Foundation, CES Innovation Awards, Elle Decor and the Design Awards. His work is represented in the permanent collection of Designmuseum Danmark.
