To celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s enduring legacy and more than 70 years of collaboration, acclaimed international designer Ilse Crawford reimagines the great master’s first five chairs for Carl Hansen & Søn through a carefully curated palette of contemporary colors.
Bringing the decades-old designs into the 21st century, with great respect for their original form and with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship techniques, the chairs’ timeless forms are accentuated through the use of rich, painterly colors, inspired by the expressionist works of Per Kirkeby, one of Denmark's most significant painters. The carefully curated palette of translucent, non-toxic, water-based paints was specially selected by Crawford to add depth and complexity to the familiar shapes – to create an atmosphere, as well as to allow the natural beauty of the FSC™-certified oak wood grain to shine through each design (FSC C135991).

Ilse Crawford respectfully reimagined Hans J. Wegner’s iconic designs with five deep and complex colors, inspired by the expressionist works of Danish artist Per Kirkeby, a nod to the raw beauty of the Nordic landscape. Water-based, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly, each has a slightly transparent finish to allow the natural beauty of the FSC™-certified oak wood grain to shine through each design, creating a nuanced sense of color and texture. The paper cord seat of each design is woven by hand from paper cord.
