MALENE BACH

Malene Bach is an artist living and working in Præstø, South Zealand. The private space of her home is often where her ideas and explorations begin and where she can test them freely. Crossing into the studio to reflect and contemplate, she naturally merges her home and artistic practice.

“Home is peace. A space for contemplation. A sanctuary. It’s a place I can keep transforming – creating new spatial situations again and again.”

In Malene's studio, every piece of furniture has a specific, often multifunctional purpose. Given the limited space, she designs pieces that meet her working needs and carefully selects items that introduce a particular idea, form, material, or cultural reference. These pieces occasionally transition between her studio and her home.

“Furniture and functional objects that surround us – especially in the home – must possess several qualities: They should be pleasing to touch, to look at, and to use.”

Within her studio, the CH26 chair serves an ideal purpose for contemplation and observation of her work, occasionally for sketching or taking notes. This versatile chair frequently relocates, as it functions equally well at the table or as a comfortable seat for relaxation.

“The CH26 chair in my studio is incredibly comfortable – even though it’s a dining chair, it feels soft, round, and gentle.”

When working, Malene uses the KK44860 Side Table for her tools, materials, or small installations and experiments.

“Its shape is so simple – it feels like the very idea of a table, before design. Sometimes great design is almost non-design. That quiet contradiction fascinates me.”

“The great Danish classics are part of my cultural family – a shared heritage. I’m happy to live with them, but they stand out most clearly when placed in contrast to something entirely different.”

“I love my old safari chair. It’s such a well-thought-out piece – unpretentious and simple – which makes it beautiful in both form and material. It’s sturdy, it invites movement and use, and it only gets better with patina.”

Malene rescued the chair from a dumpster. She then renovated it – replacing parts instead of purchasing a new one. It reflects the chair’s original spirit and makes it more meaningful to her.
