Rikke Frost
Organic shapes that put people first.
Danish industrial designer Rikke Frost is respected for her profound knowledge of materials and organic style.
Rikke Frost (b.1973) has always been eager to learn more about how to combine different craft traditions and types of material, which is clearly reflected in her design portfolio where traditional and contemporary design axioms converge in her organically styled sofas, tables, chairs and lamps. In addition to a distinctive expression, often featuring circular shapes, Frost focuses on creating long-lasting, functional designs that put people first.
As an industrial designer, Frost bases her work on three words: minimal, magical and mindful. She strives to minimise the number of elements of the design process, particularly in how she uses materials and resources. Frost also explains how she infuses her tactile experiences, details and functions with ‘magical moments’ for the end user to explore and reflect on. In so doing, these three words permeate the process from initial idea to the materialisation, narrative and launch of the product.
Rikke Frost’s interest in crafts and materials dates back to her childhood in the small Danish town of Bov. Her creativity later took her to the Aarhus School of Architecture where she trained as an industrial designer. Although her field of study focused on industrial design, Rikke Frost chose to focus on furniture design, and she has since designed furniture for several renowned companies in Denmark and abroad.
Industrial design has left its mark on her design process, however, as she continuously considers the production possibilities from the outset. Frost selects materials, shapes and artisanal methods that are easily adaptable to modern production processes.
After spending several years in London, where Rikke Frost worked as a designer and buyer for Heal & Son, she returned to Denmark in 2004 to set up her own design studio, Rikke Frost Design. Later on, she also started to teach courses at the Aarhus School of Architecture.
Rikke Frost has won several awards and been acclaimed in both Denmark and abroad, including the Danish Design Award, Bolig Magasinet’s Design Award, the German Design Award and the Design Award of the Wallpaper design magazine. Her designs have also been exhibited at the Cabinetmakers' Autumn Exhibition and at the Trapholt Museum of Modern Art, Craft and Design in Kolding, Denmark.
“Design must serve the purposes of the times we live in and far into the future,”
says Rikke Frost about her approach to design.
