The Tsugi Shelf for Carl Hansen & Søn was designed with equal focus on form and function. The apparently simple shelf exploits the principles of the ingenious and precise Japanese Sashimono carpentry, concealing the locking mechanism without visible transitions. The shelf combines solid teak and oak, connected by an elegant brass peg. Available in two sizes, 60cm and 100cm, the shelf has a maximum load of 30 kg. If two shelves are placed in extension of each other, they must each carry 30 kg.

Interior architect and designer Sharon Fisher and architect Matteo Barenghi started their Danish-Italian collaboration across borders in 2008. Since then, the two architects and designers have created timeless pieces with a significant focus on quality. The focal points of the design duo are the search for natural simplicity and the fascination with suitable materials and skilled craftsmanship.

        Short and Sweet Japanese Carpentry

The Japanese name of the shelf, Tsugi, refers to the very method by which the shelf and wall bracket interlock and are secured with a brass pin. This distinctive form of joinery was developed in Japan in the 12th century, where it was used to avoid nails and screws, preserving the wood as intact as possible, especially in areas with high humidity. Despite its floating, minimalist appearance, the Tsugi shelf is very sturdy. As a functional detail, a groove has been milled into the shelf, ensuring that picture frames, small books, and other objects remain securely in place. Available in two sizes, the FB001 Tsugi Shelf is a versatile and decorative piece, elegant as a stand-alone bookshelf or combined and scaled using a mix of the shorter 60cm and original 100cm length.
