Honest craftsmanship and sculptural curves

The MK10040 lounge chair by Mogens Koch highlights his intelligent design philosophy. The lounge chair features gracious curves for enhanced comfort and a compact design that is at once elegant and simple. Its curvaceous shape, led to the Koch family lovingly nicknaming it ‘the Bathtub Chair’. The structural principle of Koch’s furniture set is an upholstered section placed on a visible, solid wood frame, with the top row holding the seat securely in place. The exposed frame structure exemplifies the Danish functionalists’ idiom of separating the bearing and borne parts – or the frame from the seat – to highlight the beauty of the natural materials and make the construction a design feature in and of itself. Variants of Koch’s furniture set were ordered for large-scale projects, including the waiting rooms and senior physicians’ offices at Denmark’s Sønderborg and Skive Hospitals. The set is completed by the two-seater MK10041 sofa, also called Model 52 sofa.

Designer
Mogens Koch's designs reveal some of the most elegant and important solutions to the requirements of function, comfort and aesthetics. His works, from homes to monuments, building extensions, and, of course, furniture – are original examples of universal utility. Structural components and mathematics were key to Koch’s process. Traditional ornamentation for its own sake were not part of his ideology – an object’s purpose led the way. The modular concept for his Bookcase System is one of his major design successes.
